TMS treatment for Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia causes widespread chronic pain, but Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) might offer relief.

Smart TMS uses Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to treat Fibromyalgia. This innovative, non-invasive method targets the brain circuits linked to the condition.
What is Fibromyaglia?
Fibromyalgia pain is often described as intense burning, itching, or stabbing sensations. It can affect the entire body but may be more severe in certain areas. This pain can last much longer than usual, making Fibromyalgia challenging to manage.
Fatigue is another common symptom of Fibromyalgia. It can range from ongoing tiredness to severe flu-like exhaustion. This fatigue can strike suddenly and be so overwhelming that it leaves you unable to do anything.
Causes of fibromyaglia
Fibromyalgia often develops after a traumatic event, which acts as a trigger. These triggers can include injuries, infections, car accidents, childbirth, surgeries, or emotional events like a breakup or the loss of a loved one. However, not everyone with Fibromyalgia experiences a triggering event; sometimes, it can develop without any apparent cause.
The exact cause of Fibromyalgia remains unclear. However, ongoing research is shedding light on this complex condition, helping us to better understand it.
Research shows that people with Fibromyalgia have lower levels of serotonin in their central nervous system. They also have three times more of the neurotransmitter substance P, which is found in spinal fluid and transmits pain signals. This combination may lead to disordered sensory processing. While someone without Fibromyalgia might feel mild stiffness or aches, those with the condition experience severe pain.
Symptoms of fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia is not just about feeling a bit tired or having minor pain. While those with milder cases can live normal lives with proper treatment, individuals with more severe cases may struggle to maintain a job or enjoy social activities.
Fibromyalgia affects about 2.9% to 4.7% of the population.
People with Fibromyalgia often experience pain that feels like widespread aching or burning, which can move throughout the body. The fatigue is severe, similar to a flu-like exhaustion, leaving individuals feeling completely drained of energy.
In addition to severe pain and fatigue, other common symptoms of Fibromyalgia are:
- Increased sensitivity to pain, light, smoke and certain foods
- Unrefreshing sleep, waking up feeling tired and stiff
- Headaches ranging from mild to migraine
- Irritable bowel which alternates between diarrhoea and constipation, and can be accompanied by bad gas in the abdomen
- Cognitive disturbances, mostly known as “fibro fog”, including lack of concentration, temporary memory impairment and word mix up
- Clumsiness
- Dizziness
- Allergies
- Muscle stiffness
Fibromyalgia treatment options
Fibromyalgia presents a variety of symptoms, so no single treatment can address them all. Current treatments focus on easing pain and enhancing sleep, targeting symptoms rather than the root cause.
In addition to over-the-counter pain relief, patients can visit a pain clinic to explore effective pain management techniques for their symptoms.
Some drug therapies, proven effective in clinical trials, are typically used for depression but at much lower doses. These help alleviate both pain and improve sleep.
In addition to painkillers and drug therapies, patients may be prescribed muscle relaxants, anticonvulsants, antipsychotics, or engage in physical activities like swimming. Talking therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychotherapy, or relaxation techniques may also be recommended.
Patients often explore alternative therapies like acupuncture, massage, chiropractic manipulation, or aromatherapy.
How does TMS work as a treatment for fibromyalgia?
TMS stimulates the brain to activate the area linked to pain perception.
TMS helps restore normal neural activity and strengthens connections between nerve cells. It also boosts levels of key neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin in the brain.
The Smart TMS Fibromyalgia treatment begins with 10 sessions over 2 weeks, followed by 2 sessions each month for a year.
Smart TMS uses the most advanced techniques based on the latest scientific research.
Research confirms that TMS is a safe and effective treatment for Fibromyalgia.
Research shows that TMS for Fibromyalgia effectively reduces pain and improves patients' quality of life. In addition to easing pain, TMS alleviates symptoms of depression and anxiety, helping patients return to a normal life.
Continuous care
Dr. Neal and his team recognise the importance of supporting patients even after their TMS treatment ends. With insights from research and our experience, we've created aftercare packages that offer ongoing support through a structured program of regular follow-up treatments.
