Smart TMS uses Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to treat Generalised Anxiety Disorder. This innovative, non-invasive method targets the brain circuits linked to the condition.
What is Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)?
Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) affects about 6% of the UK population. It is marked by ongoing, excessive worry about various life aspects like health, work, family, or social situations. People with GAD often struggle to manage their worries. Common symptoms include restlessness, fatigue, irritability, muscle tension, trouble concentrating, sleep issues, and nervousness.
What causes Generalised Anxiety Disorder?
The exact causes of GAD are not fully understood. However, researchers have identified several contributing factors, including genetic predisposition, personality traits, stressful life events, environmental influences, and brain chemistry. Neuroscience studies suggest that GAD may be linked to abnormalities in certain brain regions involved in emotion regulation, such as the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and anterior cingulate cortex.
How does TMS treat Generalised Anxiety Disorder?
Research indicates that TMS can be a valuable treatment for GAD by influencing brain areas linked to anxiety. Studies confirm that TMS protocols targeting the prefrontal cortex effectively and safely reduce anxiety symptoms in GAD patients. A 2022 meta-analysis of six studies showed that TMS significantly improved anxiety scores in these patients.
At Smart TMS, we effectively address anxiety and depression together using our combined protocol. In a study of 142 patients, 58% achieved remission from significant anxiety, and 84% experienced a notable reduction in anxiety symptoms.
