What is anxiety?

Anxiety is a prevalent mental health issue in Ireland.

Anxiety symptoms can affect both the mind and body. They differ for each individual but may include:

  • Restlessness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feelings of dread
  • Feelings of being on edge
  • Problems sleeping
  • Irritability
  • Dizziness
  • Heart palpitations
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dry mouth

While anxiety can feel overwhelming, it is treatable. At Smart TMS, many patients experience a significantly improved quality of life after treatment.

What causes anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural response that helps protect us from perceived threats. It triggers the "fight/flight/freeze" reaction, which is crucial for survival in real danger, like encountering a hungry lion. However, it becomes problematic when these responses interfere with everyday life.

When you encounter a lion, you might run away (flight), try to scare it off (fight), or stay still until it leaves (freeze). This reaction can save your life. However, in everyday situations, this response isn't as useful since most of us won't face a wild animal. For instance, you might feel very anxious about giving a presentation at work or school. You might react by freezing and struggling to think clearly, snapping at your co-presenters, or leaving work early. In these cases, these responses can actually hold you back instead of helping you.

Experts are unsure why some people struggle to tell the difference between real and perceived danger. It might be due to past negative experiences, learned behaviors like having an anxious parent, or chemical imbalances in the brain.

What treatment is available for anxiety?

Traditional methods like medication and therapy don't always effectively address anxiety symptoms.

Studies indicate that Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) can alleviate symptoms of generalised anxiety disorder.

TMS can help restore your well-being. At Smart TMS, about 50% of our patients respond positively to treatment, with many achieving remission.

Some patients find relief from anxiety through self-help courses or books, and group courses are also an option. If anxiety persists, psychological treatments like CBT are available to teach mindfulness and coping strategies.

If you haven't noticed any improvements, antidepressants like SSRIs (such as Sertraline and Paroxetine) might be recommended. While benzodiazepines like Diazepam are effective for anxiety, they should not be used long-term due to the risk of addiction. Combining medication with psychological therapy results in about 50% of patients responding positively to treatment.

How does TMS work for anxiety?

TMS treatment uses repeated magnetic pulses to soothe brain areas responsible for symptoms of generalised anxiety disorder.

Smart TMS treatment for generalised anxiety disorder considers related issues like phobias and depression that may cause or result from anxiety.

The complete TMS treatment for anxiety typically includes 30 sessions, divided into two sets of 15 sessions each, over three to six weeks. Each session lasts 30 minutes, and some patients can have more than one session per day.
